"Traditionally, the seed pot is a clay storage pot with a small hole in the top of the vessel. The design is to protect the seeds from rodents and other pest. This silver seed pot design is decorated with butterflies and various spiritual symbols (three crosses for the Trinity, star of David, Yei Bi Cheis and Lotus flower). This piece has been a biographical journey for me, because my faith has varied over the years and have been influenced by Christian, Judaism, Buddhism, and Navajo Beliefs. Underlying all the these spiritual influences is a belief in science, symbolized the transformation of the caterpillar to the butterfly. This vessel is made to hold many seeds of faith, which all have the power to transform the human spirit into something beautiful."- Erick Begay
Erick Begay is a master silversmith and goldsmith with more than 28 years experience. He is an award winning artist that has multiple awards, including the Santa Fe Indian Market. His Family has been involved in Native American Jewelry for generations. His mother, Frances Begay, taught him the art of silversmithing, while she sold it in Santa Fe. He started making jewelry when he was eleven. When he turned 16 he became a full-time jeweler.
